Nigerian state oil firm 'withheld $25bn over five years'

Nigeria's state-owned oil company has failed to pay the government $25bn (£17.5bn) over five years, the nation's fiscal commission has said.
It includes $15bn that the nation's auditor general last week said the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) failed to pay in 2014 alone.
Oil revenue accounts for roughly two-thirds of the government's funding.
President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to crack down on corruption since coming to office last May. In a statement, the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), an independent body, said: "Records at the Commission's disposal indicate that between January 2011 and December 2015, the total indebtedness of NNPC to the Federation Account was 4.9 trillion naira."

Previous allegations

Under the current set-up, the NNPC hands over its oil revenue and money is then paid back based on a budget approved by parliament.

Nigerian oil worker

The state oil giant has been mired in corruption allegations and losing money for many years.
Last month, the government announced that the NNPC would be broken up into seven different companies.
A separate audit ordered under former President Goodluck Jonathan and carried out by global accountancy firm PwC, found that the NNPC had failed to pay the government $1.48bn between January 2012 and July 2013.
Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil producer, but the economy has suffered because of the recent decline in the price of oil.

BMW M3 Competition Package (2016) review

The new 2016 BMW M3 Competition Package

They're a discerning bunch, BMW M3 buyers. Did you know that 70-80% of the last E90 generation sold in the UK had the Competition Package upgrade? This option's not been available yet on the F80, but now the go-faster box of tricks is coming on stream - and we've just driven the new, more powerful Comp-spec M3 for the first time.
When you see what your £3000 premium bags you in the way of extra goodies, you can see why Munich is forecasting this car will count for the majority of sales again:
  • 19bhp power upgrade
  • 0-62mph sprint drops to 4.0sec
  • Chassis: recalibrated springs, dampers, anti-roll bars
  • Updated driving modes, Active M Differential
  • 20in M alloy wheels with 265/30 (f), 285/30 (r) tyres
  • Lightweight M sports seats, M-striped seatbelts
  • M sports exhaust, Shadow Line black gloss detailing
As option packs go, it's a lot for your money. If you're already stumping up £56,595 for a regular BMW M3, the logic is dropping another three grand on upgrades is a no-brainer. Especially as most will pay on finance, where the cost is spread across several years.

How to spot a BMW M3 Competition Pack

From a distance, this could be mistaken for any old M3: take one regular four-door 3-series saloon, stick some big rims on it, and a discreetly macho bodykit, with just the right mix of menace and modesty, so you won't stick out like the Porsche-slayer you are.
But there are subtle differences. That Shadow Line matt black trim lends a stealth cloak, replacing chrome on the side window graphic (what designers call the DLO, or daylight opening), the M3 badge on the bootlid, the kidney grille and side gills too. The 20in rims are also new.

How does the Competition Package affect the drive?

There's no mistaking the underlying M3 qualities at play here - but everything about the Comp Pack car feels sharpened. The sports exhaust has been recalibrated, and there's a dose of additional woofle, immediately noticeable at start-up. It's less clattery than the first regular M3s we drove.
Those 19 extra ponies make themselves felt on the road. The M3 has never been a slow car and the turbocharged six-cylinder now has performance capable of out-slugging even junior-league supercars: 0-62mph takes just 4.0sec (a tenth faster), when equipped with the twin-clutch auto, like ours was (instant gearchanges, lovely tactile metal paddles - take note Jaguar). We still miss the E90's zesty V8, if we're being honest - this straight six 3.0-litre is less charismatic, but it sure does pull like a train.
Zip the drive mode into Sport or Sport+ and it sounds raspier, fruitier. It's like M division engineering composers have learned how to fine-tune turbo'd engines and re-inject a frisson of fun. And the chassis handling is sublime, feeling hunkered down with an iron glove of body control yet a decent degree of compliance to soak up the patina of bumpy roads. Traction is impressive too, the active diff keeping all 406lb ft of blown torque on the road most of the time.
Special mention to the accurate, well judged steering too: it's not the most feelsome helm, but the M3 feels more agile than ever. All the more impressive, since our car rode on winter tyres and smaller, 19-inch wheels. We also had £6k's worth of ceramic brakes, which proved supremely powerful and fade-resistant, if a little grabby at low speeds.

The extra equipment

Those lightweight sports seats are quite something, with cut-outs to differentiate them from regular M3 pews. We're not fans of their backrests' naff illuminated M tricolor badge that glows cheaply at nighttime, but the thin buckets are grippy and more comfortable than their skeletal structure suggests. The discreetly M-striped seatbelts are a nice touch, too.
Otherwise, it's a stock BMW interior. The iDrive controller has evolved into a logical system of Germanic efficiency; the navigation is a paragon of clarity; the dashboard design is slightly less polished, less cohesive than what you'll find in an Audi A4 or Mercedes C-class; but the driving position and major controls are all brilliantly placed. There's no doubting the M3 is a proper driver's car first, and a sensible four-door family chariot second.

Verdict

The Competition Package improvements do enough to nudge the M3 back up to a five-star car. CAR was disappointed by 2014's four-door, which felt like a step back from the brilliant E90-era V8. Now with 2016's upgrades, it feels like the M3 is back on its game.
We'd wholeheartedly recommend the extra performance, sublime chassis tweaks and extra character of the M3 Comp Pack.

Springs, dampers and Active M differential all upgraded on new Competition Pack M3

We still miss the old 4.0 V8, though there's no doubting the performance of 3.0 turbo

New Alfa Romeo Giulia spec secrets

http://images.car.bauercdn.com/pagefiles/26961/00_alfaromeo_geneva.jpg

The cooking and common Alfa Romeo Giulia models were confirmed at the 2016 Geneva motor show, providing a glimpse of how the Italians hope to poach business users and families away from their default 3-series, A4s, C-classes and XEs.
The new Giulia, which replaces the 159 in Alfa's line-up, arrives in right-hand drive form in September 2016, a few months after left-hookers. Left-hand drive production is due to start in March.
Until now, Alfa has only shown the new Giulia in Quadrifoglio form - but now it's confirmed more details, including a 99g/km CO2 diesel version in the works. Read the full story on the Cloverleaf here.

The cooking or garden Alfa Romeo Giulia: the specs

The engine choice for the common Giulia models looks like this:
  • 2.2-litre 4cyl turbodiesel 148bhp @ 4000rpm, 280lb ft @1500rpm, 137mph, 0-62mph 8.4sec (8.2sec auto)
  • 2.2-litre 4cyl turbodiesel 178bhp @ 3750rpm, 332lb ft @ 1750rpm, 143mph, 0-62mph 7.2sec (6.8sec auto)
  • 2.0-litre 4cyl petrol turbo 197bhp @ 5000rpm, 243lb ft @1750rpm, no performance figures available yet
  • 2.9-litre V6 petrol 507bhp and 443lb ft (no engine speeds available), 190mph, 0-62mph 3.9sec
The latter powers the Quadrifoglio and features cylinder deactivation to cut emissions, although no CO2 figures have yet been quoted. Alfa has confirmed, however, that a 99g/km version of the high-power diesel is on the cards.
All three engines are made entirely of aluminium; it's the first time an Alfa diesel has used an all-alloy block. Eight-speed automatic transmissions are available and these models get a hefty torque uplift on overboost, accounting for the nippier acceleration claims above.

The engineering details

The Giulia is claimed to be lightest in its class, with a carbonfibre driveshaft on all models and aluminium used extensively throughout the car: for instance, the doors, wings, brakes and suspension components are all made of aluminum across the range. The wheelbase is also longest in class and the boot stands at 480 litres in capacity.

Alfa Romeo Giulia: on UK sale by September 2016

The 178bhp diesel model weighs in at 1374kg (dry), or 1449kg with fluids onboard. Alfa raids the composites cupboard some more for the Quadrifoglio - with a carbonfibre bonnet, roof and spoilers, keeping its dry weight pegged to 1524kg. Enough for a 335bhp-per-tonne power-to-weight ratio and some M3-troubling pace.
Handling should be boosted by a claimed 50:50 weight distribution. Front suspension is by double wishbones and the rear wheels are suspended by a four-arm multi-link set-up - standard on all models. The steering is claimed to be the most direct of any compact exec rival, with a ratio of 11.8:1.

Alfa Romeo Giulia specs and equipment in the UK

  • Giulia Available with 2.0 petrol and diesel engines: 16in alloy wheels, LED rear lamps, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, 6.5in touchscreen, lane departure warning, collision warning systems
  • Giulia Lusso Available on 2.0 models: adds full-grain leather trim, electric, heated seats, wood trim, xenon headlamps
  • Giulia Sport Available on 2.0 models: adds sports steering wheel, aluminium interior trim, xenon headlamps
  • Giulia Quadrifoglio 19in alloys, xenon headlamps, sports seats, leather and Alcantara trim, sports steering wheel, carbon seats, ceramic brakes, Chassis Domain Control (CDC) to tailor engine, suspension, torque vectoring and active aero
It's also our first proper look inside the cabin of regular Alfa Guilia models. Different spec models get a 3.5in or 7in colour instrument pack and it feels a premium, Alfa-style experience, although some of the cars we sat in at Geneva felt a little more like Volvos with their blonde Scandinavian woods and trims.

New 2017 Honda Civic prototype unveiled in Geneva

Civic concept

This is Honda’s new Civic hatch, the 10th generation of its evergreen family car. Well, officially this Geneva motor show is billed as a prototype, but 99% of what you see here will reputedly be coming down the Swindon production line early next year.
It’s a global car for Honda and it joins the recently unveiled four-door saloon and three-door coupe. A Tourer-badged estate is also expected by mid 2018.
Of arguably more interest is the news that a Type R model is expected to arrive much more early on in this model’s lifecycle, compared to the current Type R whose arrival at the hot hatch bash was more than fashionably late. Expect its tyre-smoking debut by the end of 2018.

Made in England for a global market

The Civic is a big deal for Swindon, which has just benefited from a £21m upgrade to handle 10th-gen production for all markets including America, an injection that brings total investment in the plant to a hefty £2.25b. Boosted by the arrival of the recent arrival of the Jazz and HR-V, Honda is hoping the Civic will push annual European sales north of 160,000.
The new Civic, now in its 40th year, is exactly that – new. It’s built around a brand new chassis architecture that’s allowed lead Civic designer Daisuke Tsutamori to create a car 30mm wider, 20mm lower and 130mm longer. The result is a car that looks significantly chunkier and, in Prototype guise, notably more aggressive than the outgoing model. ‘We wanted to shock our customers and move them away from traditional evolutionary styling,’ says Tsutamori.

2015 Volvo S80 Review

1. Volvo S80

The Volvo S80 scored a “good” in all areas, and a “superior” in the front crash prevention test, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). When equipped with the optional collision warning with full auto braking system, the Volvo S80 avoided collision at 12 mph and was able to reduce impact speed by 13 mph when tested at 25 mph. The roof was able to withstand 4 times the vehicle’s weight before crushing 5 inches, earning it the highest rating in this field. In the small overlap front test very little, if any, injury was reported on the dummy. Driver space was well
maintained, with a maximum intrusion of 4 cm, and the dummy’s movement was well controlled.

Laferrari

2. Ferrari LaFerrari

$1.4 million
While it may have a silly name, the Ferrari LaFerrari is gearing to become the king of exotic sports cars. Clocking in at $1.4 million dollars, it certainly costs a pretty penny. The LaFerrari is powered by a 950 horsepower hybrid engine. The V12 outputs 789 horsepower and gets the additional 161 of its horsepower from an electric motor. With a 0-60 mph time of 2.5 seconds and a 0-150 mph time of 9.8 seconds, the LaFerrari is no slouch, beating the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 by 1.5 seconds. A very low center of gravity and light steering allows the LaFerrari to navigate high speed turns with grace, although with that price tag you may not want to fly around corners for fear of destroying your investment

Pagani Huayra Beverly Hills

3. Pagani Huayra

$1.4 million
The Pagani Huayra is a 720 horsepower, mid-engined, million dollar supercar. The 6 liter twin-turbo V-12 engine gets the Pagani Huayra to a top speed of 230 mph. The vehicle has motorized body surfaces that constantly lift and tuck lift an F-16’s flaperons with the goal of reducing body roll and stopping distances. The flaps on the Huayra’s upper body are designed to act like wing ailerons. Above 50 mph, all four lift 10 degrees to increase downforce. When the driver turns the wheel, the flaps on the inboard side rise to 20 degrees to counteract body roll. Under braking, all four lift to 40 degrees to act as air brakes. The cockpit looks like something from a spaceship, with bionic-Bauhaus sculptures in cut aluminium

4. Aston Martin One-77

$1.4 million
The Aston Martin One-77 was a limited production supercar built by Aston Martin. There were only 77 produced from 2009-2012, which is why it was named One-77. The One-77 features a full carbon fibre monocoque chassis, a handcrafted aluminium body, and a naturally aspirated 7.3 liter V12 engine with 750 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. The car uses a strengthened version of the DB9’s 6-speed automated manual transmission and height-adjustable pushrod suspension coupled with dynamic stability control. Top speed of the One-77 was clocked at 220 mph and it has a zero to sixty time of 3.5 seconds. Carbon Ceramic Matrix brakes are used to to increase braking power, so the car can safely decelerate from high speeds

Ferrari e America: 60 anni insieme.

5. Ferrari F60 America

$2.5 Milion
To celebrate their 60th anniversary, Ferrari created the Ferrari F60 America. Based on the F12 Berlinetta, the Ferrari F60 America is modified to suit what Ferrari felt Americans would want. The vehicle exterior is blue with white racing stripes, and the interior is clad in red leather and red accents. There is no roof, because who doesn’t love a convertible? The V12 engine produces 730 horsepower and can go from zero to sixty in 3.1 seconds. The price tag of the Ferrari F60 America was $2.5 million, 8 times the $320,000 price tag of the F12 Berlinetta– and all ten of them were sold before Ferrari even unveiled the vehicle. The only thing that would make this car more American would be replacing the standard Ferrari emblem with a bald eagle.

2015 Koenigsegg One:1

6. Koenigsegg One:1

$2.8 million
With a Price tag of $2.8 million dollars, the Koenigsegg One:1 is built for one purpose: speed. Its name, meant to be pronounced as “one to one,” refers to the car’s metric power output of 1 megawatt (1341 horsepower when fueled by a E85 alcohol-gasoline blend) and its perfectly balanced power-to-metric weight ratio. The interior trim is minimal but covered in carbon, the seats have a six point harness to keep you firmly affixed while driving, the speedometer reaches 280 mph, and a power gauge shows how much horsepower the engine is producing. Speaking of engines, the One:1’s engine is a 5.1 liter twin turbo V-8 that produces 1341 horsepower and 738 foot pounds of torque ( 1161 horsepower if using regular gasoline).

Mansory Vivere Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport

7. Mansory Vivere Bugatti Veyron

$3.4 million
The Mansory Vivere Bugatti Veyron is a modified Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse. The vehicle is upgraded by Mansory, and all of the changes are to the aesthetic look of the vehicle. The exterior of the Vivere is covered in a superbly lacquered carbon fiber. Other changes include a new inner front grill, shortened hood, larger side scoops, a spoiler package that provides new diffusers, front apron, and new rims. The headlights and taillights are upgraded with LEDs as well. The interior is re-upholstered and covered in carbon fiber, and an LED lighting system illuminates the cockpit. The engine is left unchanged, but considering it’s an 8.0 liter W16, capable of producing 1,200 horsepower and 1,106 lb-ft of torque, I don’t think it needs any changes

Lykan HyperSport 2014

8. W Motors Lykan Hypersport

$3.4 million
Produced by W Motors, the Lykan Hypersport is the first supercar to be produced in the Middle East. At $3.4 million dollars, it is the third most expensive car ever made behind the Lamborghini Veneno ($4.5 million) and the Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita ( $4.8 million). With only 7 expected to be produced, the Hypersport is also among the rarest. Housing a 3.7L flat six motor with an estimated 750 horsepower that can go a top speed of 239mph, the Hypersport certainly brings power and speed to the table, but it’s the added options that bring up the price tag. Options like diamonds, rubies, yellow diamonds, and sapphires integrated into the headlights, which are made up of titanium LED blades containing 420 diamonds, or the leather interior featuring gold stitching. Each unit sold also comes with a special edition Cyprus Klepcys watch worth over $200,000 so you can wear a piece of your car wherever you go. A Lykan Hypersport was featured in the most recent Fast and the Furious film.

Lamborghini Veneno Roadster 4 K- UHD- Wallpaper

9. Lamborghini Veneno

$4.5 million
In celebration of Lamborghini’s 50th birthday, the company created the ultra-expensive and exclusive Veneno. Named after one of the strongest and most aggressive fighting bulls ever, the Veneno is powered by a 6.5 liter V12 that produces 740 horsepower. Only 5 were ever made, 2 for the company and 3 for customers. One of the Venenos, with red accents, went to Antoine Dominic, owner of Lamborghini Long Island. The second, with green accents, went to Kris Singh, a car collector from florida. The third, accented in white, went to an unknown customer in Macau. The Veneno retailed for $4.5 million dollars, and all the customers purchased them sight unseen, only being given artist’s renderings of the vehicle. The original production Veneno, dubbed “car zero” resides in the Lamborghini museum.
CCXR Trevita

10. Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita

$4.8 million
The Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita is a limited edition of the Koenigsegg CCXR, featuring a diamond weave carbon fiber finish. This is a new and unique method to manufacture carbon fiber. Using this method Koenigsegg was able to coat the fibers with a diamond finish. Three were planned to be produced, but because of the complexity to make the special white carbon fiber, only two were ever made, making it one of the rarest vehicles produced by Koenigsegg. Both cars featured the Koenigsegg Shimmering Diamond Weave bodywork, double carbon rear wing, inconel exhaust system, carbon ceramic brakes with ABS, airbags, paddle-shift, chrono instrument cluster, infotainment system, tire monitoring system, and a hydraulic lifting system. Floyd Mayweather and a man in Geneva each own one of the Trevitas

10 Cars Men Lust After

Maserati GranTurismo S

maserati-gt
The beautiful Maserati GranTurismo coupe was launched in 2007, and in 2010 they made an even more attractive (and more expensive) version – a cabriolet. They announced they would stop making it in 2014. Maserati GranTurismo S was introduced in 2008. This beast has a 4.7-liter V8 and 434 horsepower, reaches 62 mph in 4.9 seconds. Its top speed is 183 mph, which is more than great for a vehicle that weighs 1.8 tonnes. It is one of those things that can’t be described with words, so take a look at the photo, or even better – schedule a test ride if you can. It can be yours for roughly $150,000.

10 Cars Men Lust After

918-spider

This hybrid has a 135 kg 4.6-liter V-8 engine, and 2 electric motors. It develops 887 horsepower (608 coming from the engine and 279 coming from the two electric motors). The Spyder is capable of developing 62 mph in just 2.5 seconds. The battery power lasts about 12 miles. Another innovation was brought in: 4 wheel steering. The starting price is roughly $848,000, and it’s a limited edition. What else do you get for that money? Well, take a look at the photo.

Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR1 – The Blue Devil

chevrolet_corvette_c6_zr1
This amazing coupe comes with a 6.2-liter V-8 engine, supercharger, the strenght of 638 horsepower at 6500 RPM, top speed of 205 mph, and magnetic selective ride control with 2 modes: sport and tour. This car is fairly lightweight (1.5 tonnes). It does look like a sports car, but at the same time it is elegant and classy. If you want it, you can get it for $112,000 – $130,000.

Bentley Mulsanne

Bentley-Mulsanne

With its twin-turbo 6.75-liter V8, this machine is truly impressive. It is actually the only Bently model with such engine and rear wheel drive. Despite its weight (2.6 tonnes), it feels light, fast and powerful and reaches 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. Quite good for a „heavyweight“ car. For years, Bently has been a symbol of status and class. If you want a luxurious car, you have found it – available at the price of $306,000.

Aston-Martin Rapide

Aston-Martin-Rapide

The 5.9 V12 engine is just one great thing about this four-door hatchback. With 470 horsepower and capable of reaching 60 mph in 5 seconds, it is powerful enough, no matter how crazy you are. It comes with a six-speed touchtronic automatic transmission. Its interior is as impressive as its exterior: memory seats with heating and cooling, walnut trim, leather, and powerful sound system. This is not just a high quality car. It looks amazing, too. It can be yours for $201,000.

Ferrari 458

ferrari_458-Wallpaper
They said this one would replace the 430 model, but they made it completely different. Better. Much better. Pretty powerful, with 4.5-liter V8, reaches 62 mph in 3.3 seconds. Driving this lightweight car (1.4 tonnes) will make you feel like you’re flying. Any attempt to describe the exterior would be just a waste of time, so we are giving you a photo to enjoy. This beautiful thing can be yours for $ 237,000. If you can’t afford it, it is best not to look at it, or else you will fall in love and suffer for the rest of your life.

Lamborghini Aventador

Lamborghini-Aventador
For a car that only weighs 1.5 tonnes, Lamborghini Aventador is incredibly powerful. With a 6.5-liter V12, reaching 60 mph in 2.9 seconds, and top speed of 217 km/h, ‘the fighting bull’ will leave you breathless. And so will its price – $400,000 – $440,000. As for the LP 700-4 model, they announced they would produce only four thousand cars. The production is, of course, very slow, but it’s worth waiting.

Chevrolet Corvette C7

corvette-c7

Beside its looks, the most impressive thing about this car is probably its engine: 6.2-litre V8 LT1 – a small block engine with three great innovations: active fuel management, variable valve timing, and direct injection. It comes either with a six-speed automatic transmisssion or seven-speed manual. Compared to the previous generation, there is one downside – considerably decreased luggage space. However, this car is amazing in so many ways, and if you buy it, luggage will be the last thing on your mind

Honda (Acura) NSX 2015

Acura_NSX
This beauty is not here yet, but we are looking forward to meeting her. It is planned for 2015. The previous models came with an impressive aluminum V6 VTEC engine that Honda is famous for, and we expect the 2015 NSX to be even more impressive. Honda stopped making NSX in 2005, and after a long break, the production will start again with an amazing new model. Honda lovers are expecting it with impatience, and so are we. They haven’t revealed much about it, but the photo from the International Car Show in NY 2012 should tell you quite enough

Jaguar XF Premium Luxury

jaguar-xf
If you want luxury, that is exactly what you get – inside and out. We’re talking about fancy interior: leather seats with heating, touch-screen indicators to help you park the car easily (hey, you don’t want to scratch this one!), auto-dimming mirrors to help you at night, turbocharged engine, eight-speed smart stop-start transimition and much more. With top speed of 149 mph and 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, it is a fairly decent car. The price ranges between $45,000 and $95,000.

Jagaban vs  KingKong the  review

Jagaban and KingKong  are two songs that  stand out on account of their striking similarity instrumentally. Anyone who has listened to “King Kong” by Vector da Viper, and had the opportunity to listen almost consecutively to “Jagaban” by Ycee, will immediately be struck by the almost identical percussional elements adopted by both songs. They share enough qualities to incite suggestions that they were created by the same producer. These speculations though, are false, and similarities can simply be attributed to the “season”. As I explained earlier, “percussions” are in vogue, and hence, proliferate use of it by all is something that we should come to expect. Still, distinctions can be made among these two songs taking the spot-light in this article, with other elements apart from their collective instrumental use, being taken into consideration.
To start with, their similarities are several. They are both rap songs, hence both artistes adopt a standard arrangement of lyrics more informally known as “bars” in their songs. Vector’s lyricism as of late, has tilted towards the indigenous, hence, “King Kong” despite its foreign brand, utilizes local parlance, just as well as “Jagaban” which seems more obviously indigenous in its title, in reference to former senator and governor of Lagos state Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The two songs also have a single titular boastful theme that the artistes identify themselves as, and is repeatedly emphasized throughout the course of the songs. Vector posits himself as “King Kong” a figure of speech identifying his dominance musically, while Ycee, seemingly attributes his influence presently and potentially to being like “Jagaban” or the former governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who in reality, despite his retirement from political office, still continually exerts his influence financially and politically. Both artistes also utilize energy in the delivery of their lyrics to match the percussional urgency both songs exhibit.

Where they differ, is in vocal quality. “Jagaban”  has a unique element inherent in its artiste’s vocal output. Ycee, who is relatively new to the music scene in terms of success and popularity, appears to carry the song, placing emphasis on certain words and involuntarily, making listeners pay more attention to his vocals and lyrics than to the instrumentals. Ycee’s voice is notably gravelly, hence his energetic deliveries pack more punch. He attempts despite this, to inculcate a foreign element to his vocals by affecting an accent, an effort that I personally deem to be unnecessary and unattuned to the theme and tone of the song.
Vector on the other hand, a veteran rapper with a relatively illustrious career under his belt, delivers “King Kong” in his trademark pseudo Indigenous and animated style, but in my opinion fails to pack a punch vocally. The instrumental accompaniment appears to do all the work, with Vector seemingly going “along for the ride”.
Vector as a rapper as proven his mettle several times, and one of his strong points as a lyricist has been his clarity of expression. As much as this song does tick a lot of boxes in regards to the quality and ingenuity of its instrumentals, its vocal strength strikes me as weak and its message passage was uncharacteristically blurry, in comparison to Vector’s other work.
Thus, in rating “King Kong” by Vector on a personal scale of 5 stars, I’ll give the song 3 stars, but mostly on account of Vectors pedigree, and the quality of the instrumental accompaniment.
“Jagaban” on the other hand despite its seemingly “seasonal” participation instrumentally, displays a similarly appealing quality in its instrumental production, with the added advantage of a much stronger vocal rendition by Ycee. The unforgivable flaw to the largely Indigenous song, was the foreign accent affectation, an inclusion that automatically denies the song a star on my personal scale of 5 stars.
Hence, in rating “Jagaban” by Ycee on the 4 stars left on my scale, i’ll give the song, 3 and a Half stars, on account of the strength of Ycee’s vocal delivery, and the relative and arguably more indigenous relevance of its title.
Both songs regardless of my critique, are going to fit right at home in several forms of the Foreign club scene, as well as the Nigerian. They both possess enough percussional strength to be club anthems for many a reveler to toast to. Hopefully, the flaws pointed out and criticized in these songs would be improved upon by each artiste in their subsequent projects. Till then, have fun dancing to the two songs, and indeed all popular Nigerian songs, from every outlet they might be played through.
